Unadoptable. Authorities called these precious babies, two boys and a girl, “unadoptable.” Why? they were racially mixed, Hispanic and Black, or Hispanic and White, and they said people looking to adopt didn’t want racially mixed babies. Had they been Black, or Hispanic, or White, they would have had a better chance. But not mixed.
A racially mixed bilingual couple who had been through a sore trial with cancer found themselves healed but infertile, and they wanted children. What could be more perfect! After applying to adopt these children, one after another these beautiful babies became part of their family. From unwanted, to treasured in a forever home, adopted almost from the day they were born. What a difference that made in their lives! Knowing they were loved and wanted, that their parents chose them, that they were precious. This is what faith does for each of us, we are adopted into God’s family forever, we become children of God.
Created beautiful and spiritual with a soul, every human being is extraordinary, full of glorious potential to be wonderful and do great things. But we are souls without an anchor until we, by faith, become God’s own. Then we are transformed from mere creations to children, heirs of God. Faith empowers adoption. “But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12,13
Faith reconciles us to God and brings us into God’s family. “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” Ephesians 2:19. Jesus said, “I will not leave you as orphans, but I will come to you. . . If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” John 14:18,23
Adoption parties are great celebrations, beaming parents and kids holding up signs outside the courthouse when they finally are officially a family. From the moment we put our faith in Christ, we, too, have a forever home with our Heavenly Father. We are chosen, we are claimed, we are precious, and we are: the children of God. Hold up your sign! It says, “I am a child of God!”
Prayer: Thank You, God for making me Your child, for welcoming me into Your family and making Your home in my heart. Let me live in the joy of my eternal relationship with You. In Christ’s name, amen.
